A Canadian mom, a Dominican dad, an energetic young boy, and a baby under one year old enjoying the beach from the safety of his family’s arms. This family photoshoot in Bávaro brought together two cultures, two very different stages of childhood, and many beautiful ways of showing love.

Can You Have a Photoshoot With a Baby Under One Year Old?

Absolutely. A baby’s first year is filled with changes that seem to happen almost overnight. The way they look at their parents, the size of their hands, and how naturally they rest against Mom’s chest or feel protected in Dad’s arms will gradually change as they grow.

A photoshoot with a baby under one year old does not require complicated poses. The most important things are the baby’s comfort, keeping them safely supported by their parents, and photographing their natural expressions.

During this session, the baby spent most of the time in Mom’s or Dad’s arms. There were also moments to feed him, change positions, and rest. These pauses do not interrupt the experience. They are part of it—and sometimes they create the most meaningful photographs.

A portrait of a mother breastfeeding her baby on the beach, for example, preserves a quiet and deeply personal part of family life. There was no need to create an artificial pose. Magda simply observed the moment, respected it, and photographed it with sensitivity.

A Family Photoshoot Designed Around the Children

Photographing a baby and a young child together requires patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor. While a baby needs calm, cuddles, and regular pauses, an older sibling usually needs the exact opposite: movement, games, and freedom to explore.

That is why we do not expect both children to do the same thing at the same time. We began with portraits of the whole family among the tropical greenery and soft sand of Bávaro Beach. We then alternated group photographs with individual moments so that neither child became overwhelmed or tired.

Little by little, the older brother became more confident. He walked between his parents, climbed onto Dad’s shoulders, played with Mom, and eventually ran straight into the water, laughing and splashing through the waves.

While he was playing, we also created quieter portraits of the baby with each parent. This allowed the session to unfold naturally and gave the family a complete gallery reflecting both ages: the peaceful tenderness of a baby’s first year and the unstoppable energy of early childhood.

How to Prepare for a Beach Photoshoot With a Baby

For a family photoshoot with a young baby, we recommend choosing a time when the sunlight and temperature are more comfortable and avoiding overly long sequences of photographs.

Parents should bring anything that normally helps their baby feel relaxed: milk or everything needed for feeding, diapers, a change of clothes, a lightweight blanket, and a sun hat.

It is perfectly fine if the baby falls asleep. It is also fine if they need to eat or do not want to look toward the camera. A baby does not need to smile in every photograph to create beautiful memories.

Their curious expressions, tiny movements, and peacefulness in their parents’ arms are all part of their story. Our job is to notice those details and photograph them without turning the session into a stressful experience.

With young children, perfection does not mean everyone looking at the camera simultaneously. Perfection can be an older brother leaning toward the baby, a mother laughing while holding both children, or a father playing to create a genuine smile.

Bávaro Beach as the Setting for Their Family Memories

Bávaro Beach offered several different backgrounds without requiring the family to travel between locations: sandy paths beside tropical vegetation, a wooden pier, palm trees, the ocean, and a shoreline where their son could play freely.

We combined photographs of the entire family with more intimate portraits: Mom with both children, Dad holding the baby, the siblings together, and both parents caring for their youngest child.

This variety turns the final gallery into something more meaningful than a collection of beautiful vacation pictures. It becomes the complete story of a family season that will change very quickly.

A few years from now, the baby will no longer fit into their arms in quite the same way, and his older brother will have grown. That is precisely why these photographs become even more valuable with time.

Is There Sargassum on Bávaro Beach During the Summer?

During certain periods of the summer, sargassum can reach different beaches around Bávaro and temporarily change the appearance of the shoreline. On the day of this family photoshoot, however, the sand and water were completely clear, as the photographs show.

Before each session, we try to understand the current conditions at the selected beach. If sargassum could significantly affect the photographs, we speak with the family and consider other possibilities.

Depending on the conditions at that particular time, we may recommend beaches in Macao, Uvero Alto, Miches, or Bayahibe. No beach can be guaranteed to remain permanently free of sargassum because its arrival depends on winds, currents, and changing ocean conditions.

We still have not convinced the Caribbean Sea to accept instructions through WhatsApp, but we can use our local experience to look for the most suitable setting for each photoshoot.

Baseball, Dominican Roots, and Some Very Special Caps

This family also wanted to include a very personal detail: baseball caps displaying the colors and letters of the Dominican Republic.

n the Dominican Republic, baseball is much more than a sport. Dominicans often call it simply la pelota, and it is woven into everyday life, family conversations, and the childhood games of countless young players.

In the same way that children in many other countries dream of becoming professional soccer players, many Dominican children imagine themselves stepping into a major stadium with a bat in their hands and proudly representing their country.

The portraits of this Dominican father and his son wearing their baseball caps were therefore more than a fun addition to the photoshoot. They represented their connection and a way to preserve the children’s Dominican roots within a family that also carries their mother’s Canadian culture.

First, father and son posed together in their caps. Then Mom joined them while holding the baby. Their older son also received his own portrait, proudly holding the brim of his Dominican baseball cap while looking toward the camera.

The photographs were joyful, but they were also filled with identity. One day, they may help both brothers understand where they come from and appreciate the different cultures that form their family.

Photographing Siblings at Very Different Ages

When a new baby arrives, the older child is also experiencing an important transformation. They are no longer the only child in the family and are beginning to discover their new role as an older sibling.

That is why we make sure the older child feels included and receives time of their own during the photoshoot. We photographed him individually, playing with his parents, and approaching the baby with curiosity and affection.

We did not expect him to remain perfectly still beside his brother for long periods. Instead, we created short and simple moments while always keeping the baby’s safety and comfort as the priority.

These photographs of the two brothers will become especially meaningful as they grow older. They may not remember that morning on Bávaro Beach, but they will be able to see how their relationship began and how much both of them have changed.

The Best Family Photographs Happen When Children Can Play

After the family portraits, it was time for the older brother’s favorite part of the session: running toward the water. He jumped through the waves, sent water flying with his feet, and returned to the shore with a smile that no prepared pose could have produced.

These moments show how we approach photographing children. Magda offers guidance when needed, but she also gives children time to explore, move, and enjoy themselves. The camera stops feeling like an obligation, and the photoshoot becomes a small family adventure.

The photographs of Mom lifting him, Dad making him “fly” beneath the blue sky, and the little boy running through the waves preserve something more important than a perfect expression: they preserve his energy and personality during this stage of childhood.

While the older child played, the baby could rest comfortably with one of his parents. Adapting to these different rhythms allowed us to create memories of everyone without expecting the children to behave in ways that did not match their ages.

A Family Story Between Canada and the Dominican Republic

At the end of the photoshoot, we returned to the shade of a large tree beside the beach. There, we created the final portraits: the children with Mom, both siblings beside Dad, and finally the four of them together.

These last photographs summarize the entire story: a family connected by different roots, two children experiencing completely different stages of life, and parents who wanted to pause time for a moment during their days in Punta Cana.
