When John first contacted us on WhatsApp to plan a maternity photoshoot in Punta Cana, it seemed like a fairly typical inquiry. He and Carmen were staying at Meliá Punta Cana and wanted to preserve the memories of a very special chapter in their lives as they prepared to welcome their first baby.
We explained the different options for the session, whether on the beach at their resort or at one of our favorite photography locations in the Dominican Republic. Everything seemed straightforward, but then John insisted on scheduling a video call.
That call would completely change the story of this photoshoot.

A Secret Call to Plan a Surprise
When we joined the video call, we assumed John simply had a few extra questions about the photoshoot.
But that wasn't the case.
With a smile, he revealed a secret that Carmen knew absolutely nothing about.
He wanted to propose during their maternity photoshoot.
From that moment on, we quietly began planning every detail to make sure everything would appear completely natural.
A few days later, we had another call with both of them to finalize the details of the session. This time, we had to act as if nothing unusual was happening while John and the two of us shared the same secret.

Macao Beach or the Beach at Meliá Punta Cana?
Although the beach at Meliá Punta Cana would have been a perfectly good option, they ultimately decided to let us pick them up and take them to Macao Beach for their photoshoot.
It's a choice many couples make when they want a greater variety of backgrounds and scenery in their photos.
Macao Beach offers golden sand, palm trees, dramatic rock formations, turquoise water, and several unique areas that all look completely different from one another. This allows us to create a much more diverse gallery without having to travel between multiple locations.
We also scheduled the session at sunrise.
At that time of day, the temperature is more comfortable, the beach is much quieter, and the soft morning light creates ideal conditions for natural and romantic photography.

A Clever Way to Hide the Ring
During the drive and throughout the first part of the photoshoot, Carmen had absolutely no idea what was about to happen.
One of the smartest parts of John's plan was the way he hid the engagement ring.
Instead of carrying the traditional ring box throughout the entire session, he chose to keep only the ring hidden inside a pair of pants he planned to wear during their second outfit change.
A simple idea, but a very effective one.
In fact, not long after this session, we experienced a funny situation with another surprise proposal. As soon as the photoshoot started, Magda spotted the ring box sticking out of the groom-to-be's pocket. If the photographer could see it, there was a good chance the future bride might have noticed it too.
So here's a tip for future grooms planning a surprise proposal in Punta Cana: sometimes hiding only the ring can be the best way to keep the secret safe until the perfect moment.

The Moment Carmen Will Never Forget
After exploring several beautiful areas of Macao Beach, we eventually arrived at the rocky section of the shoreline.
It was exactly the spot we had chosen for the surprise.
John took Carmen's hands, and the two of them stood face to face with the Caribbean Sea behind them.
Then he began to speak.
For a few moments, she listened carefully, trying to understand why this particular moment felt different from all the others during the session.
And then it happened.
John got down on one knee.

Her Answer Was a Big YES
The emotion was immediate.
As soon as Carmen realized what was happening, the surprise quickly turned into tears, smiles, laughter, and long hugs.
While Magda photographed every second of the proposal, we also captured a few short videos so they could relive that moment exactly as it happened.
Some moments simply go beyond photographs.
And although no image can fully capture all the emotions felt in those few minutes, it is a memory that will always remain special for everyone who was lucky enough to witness it.

A Maternity Photoshoot That Ended With a Future Wedding
After the proposal, the atmosphere changed completely.
John looked much more relaxed.
Carmen couldn't stop looking at her engagement ring.
And we were simply happy to see that everything had gone exactly as planned.
With the surprise behind us, we continued exploring different areas of Macao Beach and took full advantage of the two outfit changes they had prepared for the session.
What had started as a maternity photoshoot had now become a celebration of two incredible milestones at once: the upcoming arrival of their baby and the beginning of a new chapter as an engaged couple.

The next photographs told another part of their story.
The arrival of their baby.
The tiny baby shoes.
The growing baby bump.
The excitement, anticipation, and connection shared by two people preparing to become parents.
These moments reminded us that this session was about much more than a surprise proposal. It was also about celebrating a new life and the beautiful journey that lay ahead for their growing family.

Between the Caribbean Sea and the Rocks of Macao Beach
One of the reasons we love recommending Macao Beach for couples, maternity, and surprise proposal photoshoots is the incredible variety of scenery it offers.
Within just a few minutes, you can move from an open stretch of beach lined with palm trees to more dramatic areas with natural rock formations and breathtaking ocean views.
This allows us to create galleries that feel more diverse, dynamic, and visually interesting without having to change locations.

Talking About Greece
During the drive and throughout the photoshoot, we shared plenty of conversations, stories, and laughs.
That was when we discovered that Carmen has Greek roots and that their wedding may take place in Greece next year.
As we talked about photography, travel, and future plans, the inevitable question came up:
"So Pascal, what do you do besides helping during photoshoots?"
When we mentioned that Pascal also works as a professional saxophonist for weddings and special events, we noticed a few very interested looks.
Maybe it was just our imagination.
Or maybe we had just earned a few extra points toward a future wedding in Greece.
Whatever happens, we sincerely wish them a beautiful celebration wherever they decide to get married.

Thank You for Trusting PuntaCanaFotoRD
After the photoshoot, we received two reviews that meant a lot to us because they perfectly described the kind of experience we try to create for every couple.
It's not just about taking beautiful photographs.
It's about helping create memories, planning surprises, finding the best light, choosing the perfect beach, and making people feel comfortable in front of the camera.
John and Carmen arrived in Punta Cana expecting a maternity photoshoot.
They left with memories from their babymoon, a surprise marriage proposal, and a story they will one day share with their child.
Every story is different, but they all have one thing in common: the memories that remain long after the photoshoot is over.
For us, it was truly a privilege to be part of their story.
We would love to help you create something truly unforgettable.
